What Is Luxury, Really?
The Slow Life Series #9
In a world where luxury and indulgence are often judged, side-eyed, or even met with guilt, a quiet question surfaced in my mind the other day:
What is luxury, if not a feeling?
It was one of those rushed mornings — an overflowing to-do list and barely enough time to breathe — so I shelved the thought. Letting it in would have slowed me down, and I couldn’t afford that.
But it returned the next day, right as I was scanning my schedule with coffee in hand. Two sips in, I found myself sighing: “If only I had the luxury to sleep in… or to slow down.”
And there it was again — the thought I couldn’t ignore anymore.
I’ve sensed the early rumblings of burnout lately. That familiar, grey cloud hanging around the edges. And truthfully, I’d choose rest over burnout any day. That moment — that coffee-sipping realization — became the spark for today’s reflection.
Because really: what is luxury, after all?
Everyday Indulgence
The more I sit with this question, the more I see how un-glamorous real luxury often looks.
Watering my plants and feeling the soil between my fingers
A quiet, unhurried morning, with sunlight drifting across the kitchen counter
Crafting a simple breakfast sandwich as my South Indian coffee gently drips through the filter
Slipping into fresh pajamas at night
A bracing cold shower after a workout
These are my tiny luxuries. They don’t make headlines — but they shift something within me.
Luxury, I’ve come to believe, is not about things. It’s about the feeling we attach to them — the experience, the pause, the warmth.
Shifting the Narrative
I know what you might be thinking: “I can’t afford that.” Or, “I don’t have time to slow down.”
But maybe… what you really crave isn’t the thing itself — but the feeling behind it.
Years ago, in my mid-twenties, I obsessed over having a perfect 7-step skincare routine. To me, that routine was luxury. I spent hours researching, saving, and striving to keep up with trends.
In hindsight, I wasn’t chasing products — I was chasing a feeling.
What I really wanted was stillness. Safety in routine. A quiet moment to wind down. And yes, a little time to just be with myself.
Eventually, I learned to recreate that feeling with a few DIY masks, slower evenings, and simplified rituals. The impact was the same. I didn’t need to fake it till I made it. I just needed to redefine it — gently, intentionally, personally.
So, How Do You Begin?
Let’s walk through a practical path for integrating luxury into your life — in ways that feel true and sustainable.
1. Mindset
Luxury begins in the mind.
It starts with how you define it — and how you feel about your own worthiness to receive it.
Consider:
Do I believe I need to “earn” rest?
Do I guilt myself after enjoying something?
Do I “save” joy for special occasions?
What does luxury really mean to me?
Am I waiting for “someday” to feel good?
If your mind links luxury to scarcity, guilt, or special exceptions — that’s your cue to gently shift the narrative. Luxury doesn’t need to be earned. It can be a quiet, everyday right.
2. Micro-Actions
Start small. Always.
If your idea of luxury is connection — how can you create micro-moments for it?
A shared meal.
A weekly call.
Ice cream after errands.
A playlist in the car with your kids.
Luxury doesn’t have to disrupt your life. It can be woven in — folded gently into your days.
3. Elevating the Everyday
Here are small, sustainable ways to elevate your daily experience:
Perspective shift: Replace “I need to” with “I get to.”
Gratitude: Focus on what’s present. What’s enough. What already is.
Routine: Create soft structure. Eat breakfast on the balcony. Add music. Light a candle.
Food: Savor it. Use the nice plates. Learn about what you’re eating.
Self-care: DIY masks, stretching, sleep — simple acts with intention.
Leisure: Carve out people-free, screen-free time. Even 15 minutes.
Appearance: Dress up just for you. Wear hand lotion. Use the good perfume.
Surroundings: Decorate your space with meaning. Art. Candles. Books. Crayon drawings.
This is a page from my life.
Not a how-to guide, not a must-do list — just what’s been working for me as I reshape how I see luxury.
I hope this finds you exactly when you need it — as a gentle nudge to slow down, take a nap, and elevate the everyday.
Now, over to you:
What does luxury mean to you?
How has guilt or inaccessibility shaped your view of indulgence?
What simple rituals make your day feel softer, deeper, better?

I found myself sighing: “If only I had the luxury to sleep in… or to slow down.” - Sub in “choice” for “luxury” and we’ve hit the nail on the head. Wealth is choice. 🙏
